Ants and Ant Control
Ants are among the most numerous insects on the face of the earth. They are members of the order Hymnenoptera, which also includes bees and wasps.
The most easily recognized characteristic of hymenoptera is their constricted pedicel ("waist") between the abdomen and the thorax, which gives their bodies an "hourglass" shape.
Adult reproductive ants also have two pairs of membranous wings at some point in their lives, although some species drop their wings and not all ant species are able to fly. Ants range in size from very tiny to well over one inch in length, and come in many different colors, to suit any decor.
Ant Species
There are many species of ants, but only a few are significant pests in the United States. Among these we find:
- Carpenter ants, who cause many millions of dollars in damage to wooden structures every year.
- Pavement ants, little black ants, and many other species of small ants who usually live outside, but often invade homes and other buildings foraging for food.
- Fire Ants, who kill plants and inflict painful stings to humans, domestic animals, and livestock.
